Say Hello to tikos, Our New Line of Ocean Plastic Bracelets
Since our very beginning, we have been committed to our mission to #makewaves for marine life. Over time, we've realized that it is our responsibility as a brand to not only support our non-profit partners, but to take a hard look at how our business and daily habits are impacting the ocean and take steps to lessen our environmental footprint.
This journey has been unfolding parallel with a growing call to reduce our reliance on single-use plastic. And this is for good reason: Eight million tons of plastic makes its way into the ocean every year – that’s about two garbage trucks worth every single minute.
Plastic is a cheap, lightweight, and easy-to-manufacture material, so it’s no wonder that it has been the go-to option for major companies around the world.
- An estimated 4 trillion plastic bags are used around the world every year, with 14 billion being used in the U.S. alone.
- 1 million plastic bottles are purchased every single minute around the globe.
But with convenience comes cost. Our planet has been suffering at the expense of our addiction to plastic:
- An estimated one million marine animals are killed every year from getting tangled in plastic or ingesting it.
- 90% of seabirds have eaten ocean plastic.
- By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
- The amount of plastic in the ocean is expected to more than double than 2030.
It’s easy to feel hopeless when reading these statistics. But, if we all pledge to rethink our daily habits, our collective action can make a meaningful impact and turn the tide on our addiction to plastic. That’s why we created tikos – our new line of cuffs made from 100% recycled ocean plastic. Each cuff is associated with a different pledge and serves as a daily reminder to:
- Skip the straw (black)
- Keep the cup (teal)
- Bring the bag (navy)
- Clean the coast (tan)
Each ocean plastic bracelet removes the equivalent of 100 plastic water bottles from the ocean and supports our new sustainable supply chain.
It's easy to feel like your actions won’t make a difference in protecting the environment. But, if we all do our part, we can make a remarkable impact: If every Cape Clasp follower were to give up plastic straws, cups, and water bottles for one year, we would prevent more than 740,000 lbs of plastic from entering the ocean - the weight of more than two blue whales!
