Monday kicks off the start of Climate Week NYC, and just yesterday, individuals from around the world walked out of their jobs and classrooms to demand action on climate change for the first day of eight days of strikes. It’s easy to focus on the terrestrial impacts of climate change, like extreme weather, but life beneath the waves is already starting to feel the effects of a changing climate.

It doesn't take long to understand how our addiction to plastic started - it's a lightweight, versatile, and inexpensive alternative to materials of the past, but it has a dark side, too; plastic is having a damaging impact on our environment, especially the ocean. That's why we should bring a reusable bag with us whenever we go shopping, instead of using a single-use plastic bag.

By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Organizations like our partner, the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, are tackling ocean plastic with innovative campaigns that focus on empowering individuals to take action. The Center recently launched the 6-Pact for the Ocean campaign with Provincetown designer Tim Covenry of TIM-SCAPES.

Keeping our oceans pristine and free of our trash is key to a healthy marine environment. Ocean trash is a global problem that is harming every corner of the globe, but there are simple steps we can all take to play our part in protecting our waters. One of the easiest things we can do? Take our trash (and any we come across!) when we leave the beach.
